Ashalon The Ashalon Chronicles Book 1 eBook Rob Ussery Reviews
Rating 3.5 stars
Warning This review contains some spoilers
Should this book ever receive a professional edit, it would deserve five stars. Rob Ussery has created a relatable, intelligent protagonist in the character of Bobby Lee. When the story starts, we are exposed to Bobby's rural family life. He grows up with his siblings and a hard working father who struggles on the farm to provide for his family. Bobby's mother has passed away, which forces his distant but loving father to take on the emotional aspects of parenting and both he and Bobby Lee struggle with the adjustment. With his normal family life as the backdrop, the main plot is about Bobby Lee discovering he has some unusual abilities and eventually the unusual things happening to him result in tragedy in his home life. This tragedy motivates him to become a superhero of sorts, but even as he is beginning to get a grip on his role on Earth, alien forces from across the galaxy make their own plans for his future. Bobby Lee is forced away from Earth and a new, but equally complex and moving, set of relationships begin to define his life. However, as he begins to get comfortable in his new home and with his new friends, he is faced with a difficult decision about what role, if any, he will play in the politics of a far off world. No matter what choice he makes, someone he cares for will be betrayed.
I left out a lot of the details to avoid spoiling the story, but I hope it's evident that the plot is unique and well-conceived. The characters motivations are all well-defined and even the `villains' are defined by balanced, complex personalities and are not portrayed as purely `evil' or `good'. Furthermore, `good' and `bad' is not plain and obvious as it might be in some less sophisticated science fiction plots. As a lover of science-fiction, this story hit every mark for me and was immensely satisfying, emotional, and fun to read. Unfortunately there were some problems with formatting and sentence structure which I felt should be reflected in my rating. However, most of the time, I was so engrossed in the story that I barely noticed these issues.
I am grateful to the author for providing me with a free copy of Ashalon for my honest review.
I was gifted a free copy of Ashalon in exchange for an honest review. There may be a few minor spoilers in the first two paragraphs of my review.
Bobby Lee Townsend lives as any other ordinary child of earth, although he is far from it. Through a series of revelations, he comes to realize that he has the ability to control energy, and that he is far from an ordinary teen. After his family's deaths in a natural disaster, he uses his abilities to save others in similar peril, and that is just the beginning of Bobby Lee's (Ashalon's) amazing journey.
I liked Bobby Lee very much. He's a good kid, a normal kid, and whether intentional or not, there were some dryly humorous moments in the story when Bobby Lee reacts to some of the startling developments that comprise his destiny. They ring true. I also enjoyed the complexities of the civilization that produced Bobby Lee's special DNA; it is nicely drawn and the characters are real and very relatable. Even the villains in this book are understandable beings who have motives that, by their own reasoning, make sense. No one is purely evil for it's own sake, and that is refreshing.
The author has created an imaginative and attractive universe, and uses it to make some subtle and rational points about equal opportunity and merit and not judging people by their appearance. While this is a significant theme, it's integral to the story and not at all didactic.
The author describes Ashalon as YA/teen sci-fi and I think that category works, although in some ways I'd expect it to appeal even more to fantasy fans. The science is cursory, usually having to do with energy manipulation, but there is no real explanation as to how the beings generate the energy they use. Still, it is a useful premise and allows for interesting fight scenes.
Ashalon could use a careful edit, not just for the occasional missing word or excess comma, but also for sentence length. While it is very much a matter of taste, there are a number of sentences that disrupt the storytelling by running on to a confusing length with multiple clauses. Some of them could easily be rephrased into two. There are also some sentences that are just plain awkward "Around the table, he could see that there were three figures, two men and one woman to whom the others sitting on either side of them appeared to defer to." And some that take a reader out of the story for other reasons, like the two at the end of the first paragraph in Chapter 1 in which `usually' is used four times.
All comments about editing aside, I really liked this novel, for its author's imagination, his characters, and his messages. I have an informal rule that if I'm reviewing a book and I think it needs significant editing I have to make this clear in the rating. For Ashalon, I wish there was a way to do two ratings to reflect how much I liked this story and where I think it needs work to be ready for readers.
