First, I commend the writer for creating a story. I always try to finish each book I start in order to give honest feedback. The plot in itself was interesting enough. But it fell into way too many cliches. Olivia Hart? I'm sorry but the name alone for a lead character?? I tried to build a connection with any of the characters but there wasn't enough details on any of them to make that happen. Olivia for example. Her family seemed like a big fixture in her life but we were never given any defining details about them. Max, a lead male character has issues that were never explained and twist towards the end that still made no sense. The story seemed like it began with massive potential but could've used details and background on everything. And another cliche..the name of the school was called Pandora. Was that to represent the different abilities and supernatural happenings that no one seemed to ever see? All in all the author shows promise. I hope she adds personal history and background to create strong feelings between the reader and the characters.Tags : The Charm (Olivia Hart and the Gifted Program Book 1) - Kindle edition by Alana Siegel. The Charm Olivia Hart and the Gifted Program Book 1 edition by Alana Siegel Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
I read this book with relish and could hardly put it down because I felt like I was one of the characters, reliving my teenage years, as one of Olivia's friends. Olivia Hart is your typical awkward high school student who managed to hide behind the shadow of her popular big brother until his graduation, after which she had to pull her own weight! Siegel successfully brings out the good, the bad and the ugly of high school years and offers her characters an escape route from their trials and tribulations through paranormal activity! A great read that I have proudly handed down to my daughter!
I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. It is in a High School setting but didn't have as much teen aged angst as I thought it would. Has a very interesting premise, 'The Gift', and Ms. Siegel developed quite an interesting story to present this. Enough romance for anyone and the characters are some of the people that I went to school with, I swear! lol She also set up the rest of the series quite nicely while giving this book a nice end. The story was enticing enough that I've already bought the second book in the series, The Retreat, and am halfway through it! Write on Alana Siegel!! )
4.5 stars! A very enjoyable book. The characters were likeable, and the pace was good. A bit confusing in the beginning with the introduction of all the characters, but stick with it, it's worth it.
When I write a review I hope that the author will read it too. Having said that, I felt that at times there was a bit too much description of the setting that didn't really add to the story. I would have liked more descriptions of some of the characters instead. I just felt that the setting was well established, but the characters in my head were still blury. I still can't picture Justin or Olivia, whereas I can Helen and Jaime. And I'm still not quite sure why Max was so incredibly horrid to Olivia. Regardless, I will happily recommend this to my middle school daughter!
I normally don't read YA books, mainly because high school wasn't my favorite time in life. The peer pressure, anger, snobbery, and all the other things I identify with high school was included in this fantastic book, without trying to gloss over anything. I discovered The Charm from reading reviews, and I'm glad I did. Alana Siegel is an author that is on her way to bigger and better. She is my kind of author, building a character until you know them, then jumping into the story, holding your attention the entire time. Her descriptive style is wonderful, as is her story of high school, friends, and magic. I have told my daughters that this is a must read. I totally enjoyed this book, and I only give it a 5 star rating because there are no higher ones.
I appreciate the hard work the author put into her product. And, the idea of the story was great.
However, sigh, the main female character was annoying; not annoying enough to be unlikeable, just enough with the vacillating and all. Most of the other characters were one dimensional. There was really no understanding of the "evil" character, so I just couldn't get worked up about him or his followers. Consequently, I couldn't get worked up about Olivia and her followers. I read reviews before purchasing books, and I have been dismayed recently with the number of rave reviews that are left for book efforts that should be rated middle of the road. With a good editor and perhaps an author's club, some of my perceptions may have been avoided. I read books prior to gifting them to my pre-teen and teen nieces to check for appropriateness and quality writing. There was nothing in The Charm that I found offensive, however, there are better writing examples for them. Unfortunately, I'll have to pass on giving them this one. I've given it three stars because in spite of my critisms, it was a good effort.
High school is a rite of passage for the typical American teenager. In The Charm (Olivia Hart and the Gifted Program), we follow the trials and tribulations of a normal teenager in high school. Olivia Hart seems to have it all smart, pretty, caring, and athletic. Yet she lacks one thing self-confidence. When Olivia Hart finds an antique necklace, she eventually discovers that she already possesses what she wants inside herself.
As Olivia learns more about her Gift, and others like her, Olivia is forced to come out of her shell, and navigate new found popularity in school, new friendships, and ultimately re-examine her old assumptions and beliefs about her life.
The author, Alana Siegel, does a wonderful job in capturing the insecurities and anxieties of a teenager in high school. Pushing aside current events and politics, the author focuses on such typical teenage concerns as homework and exams, where to sit for lunch, and homecoming dance. Indeed, Alana Siegel may be the John Hughes of this decade.
Perhaps idealistic at times, the author implies in The Charm that there is goodness in each and every one of us, if we dig deep enough and look. The Charm (Olivia Hart and the Gifted Program) is suitable to readers age 15 and up.
