As a lover of steampunk fashion and fiction, I found this novel absolutely refreshing. Quickly paced and clearly written, the characters and settings were expertly crafted so as I turned the pages, an utterly clear movie of this story played in my mind. This is a tangled story of love, revolution, and obligation. A wonderfully twisted steampunk tale. I will definitely be looking for this author's work again.

Kat Daughtry is a steampunk/erotica author that has cut her teeth on writing in multi-author book collaborations of erotica and authored both Steam Fate and the juiced up adult version of Steam Fate, Imbroglio. She is a southern belle from the dirty south putting the steam in steam punk. Daughtry writes for Twisted Core Press with several other talented writers.

Imbroglio is as before stated a spiced up version of Steam Fate. We find the character of Magistrate Adam Bellewether venturing through life-like an automaton, never doing anything wrong, never disappointing anyone but his self-absorbed wife Isabelle and playing it safe in his high societal stature. Adam is taken captive by Zona, a steam punk revolutionary that let's him live as she escapes from his little hideaway. Directly after, Adam is saved by Zona during a "burning" of his hideaway and his precious works of art he painted in which Adam attacked the constabulary and was about to be arrested. Adam finds himself falling into a deep love with Zona and the pure excitement she brings into his life, both as not being a puppet to any establishment and the intense sexual desire she brings out in him. Adam rides the fence of Magistrate to his soon promoted position of Lord Chancellor of the Police and between helping the revolutionaries by letting them escape and knowing part of their plans due to his budding relationship with Zona.

Adam goes on a journey of self-discovery through Zona and realizes that is has become a very submissive man to his duties and leaders while awaking a Dominant man in the bedroom with Zona. In this high-paced steampunk romp, Adam must decide between his duty to the Queen and his love for Zona and her cause. Does Adam go against everything he believes in, has worked for, his marriage in order to love the women of his dreams and lead a life of excitement and one that leads to something that matters? Or does he give and to his loyalty to the crown and let his duty dictate his life, love and future.

Imbroglio is a definitely a fast-paced novel full of action, romance, a great feel of steampunk and discovery. Daughtry does a great job of bring you in and keeping your attention and wanting to keep your nose in the book. The characters are actually pretty well-developed for such a short story, only 224 pages long. My knock here is I didn't really ever get the sense of Dominance that Adam supposedly showed for Zona in their fast paced relationship. This whole novel takes place in a very short amount of time and the deep abiding love that they develop for each other blossoms even quicker. It really felt that Adam was following Zona and her lead at all points in the story as opposed to him developing the Dominance discussed between the two. In all reality, Adam was submissive the whole time both in his loyalty and in his relationship with Zona.

The other issue is the real lack of detest that Adam should have felt for his cheating wife after all the years of fidelty he gave her before meeting Zona. The detest from Isabelle was most assuredly apparent towards Adam.

The book was fairly easy to predict and felt more like a young adult novel to me than an actual piece of adult steampunk erotica. As a matter of fact, it was erotica at all but more romance and quite small amounts of it. The marketing leads one to believe there is more "steam" in the book than their actually is. But this is a trivial matter.

Imbroglio all in all is a well written book. If it was a bit longer, I feel the story arc would have been stronger and been a bit more believable with the characters and their relationship getting more room to breath instead of a kind of weak frame from which the author worked evolved the story. Daughtry does a great job of inciting action, a good portion of romance and a few twists in turns that keeps the reader on their toes. It's a great effort for Daughtry in the early years of her writing career. It is highly enjoyable if you don't expect to much as far as a deep plot and lot's of "steam" instead of puffs of "steam."

I am giving Imbroglio 4 out of 5 stars as for the what it is, it is a well written book but would have been 5 stars if it was longer and the plot more fleshed out.
