Cockatiel Lessons Marguerite Floyd 9780985607524 Books Reviews
I laughed, I cried, I reminisced and I counted my blessings to be one of the lucky ones to have been able to share my life with parrots and yes, Cockatiels!!!! If you've never been charmed or fallen in love with these little puffs of feathers then you don't know what you are missing. Ms. Floyd writes from experience and from her heart...one full of love. You will learn that you will not only be "owned" by these beautiful creatures, but you will be totally enamored. An easy read, this little gem of a book will take you thru the good, the bad, and the all around wonderful daily life of sharing your heart and home with wonderful cockatiels. The lessons are easy to learn, and will forever stay in your heart.
Living with parrots is not for the "faint of heart," as illustrated by this wonderful book. Cockatiel lessons is a warm, frank, humorous and sometimes painful introduction to the world of sharing one's life with a beloved avian companion. As an anthropologist studying the human avian bond, I found Marguerite Floyd's work to be insightful and also familiar. Human avian bonds--although they may not start out that way--can be very intense and deeply moving, and for many of us life changing relationships. I was fortunate to meet the author on a Parrot Lover's Cruise to the Caribbean, and found her as witty, genuine, and engaging as her written works. I highly recommend this work for all animal lovers. In fact, I rate it five double "wings up!"
Cockatiel Lessons begins by advising the reader not to depend on the information in the book as medical or behavior advice for his or her own bird. Floyd tells the reader to find a good avian vet and parrot behavior consultant. With that positive first impression, Floyd put me in the right frame of mind to start the tale of Sugar Franklin, the yellow cockatiel.
Floyd admits to a semi-impulse purchase of Sugar Franklin and then tells the detailed story of bringing the bird home and the first 24 hours of waiting for her to eat and drink. The descriptions Floyd uses alternate between tense and humorous throughout that first weekend and all of her life changes with this feathered friend, expertly giving the reader a seat in the living room to watch the relationship between human and parrot develop.
Without giving away all the stories within the narrative, I'll share that Sugar Franklin remains the queen of the castle as a couple of new feathered friends join the flock. Floyd uses each change to teach the reader of both dangers and joys in bird husbandry. With information from her own avian veterinarian and parrot mentors interspersed, Floyd shares through her experiences what it can mean to bring a non-vetted bird home from an expo. She shares the worry, fear and dedication involved in nursing a beloved parrot through an illness. She shares tips and ideas for bird care through anecdotes and stories, not through direct lecture. She shares how a pet can open a person to new thoughts and processes. Be prepared because she also shares the intense pain and sorrow of loss, and how companion parrot community members help one another through losses.
I have to admit that I approached Cockatiel Lessons with a narrow view of self-publishing; it's my pleasure to report that I found fine quality in this book. Bird lovers will easily overlook the very few technical mistakes because the story is of interest and written with a flowing, conversational style that immediately connects with the reader.
The only area where I felt myself taken out of the action--out of Sugar Franklin and Floyd's lives--was in the chapter where Floyd lists her qualifications and affiliations. While the resume is impressive, it interrupted the flow for me. In hindsight, I realize the information can teach the reader once again; not every parrot owner will feel comfortable giving the type of care Sugar Franklin required. I believe the background Floyd shares about herself is not only a part of the biography aspect of the book, it is also part of the reason she was able to care for Sugar Franklin and make the decisions that she did. Overall, I highly recommend Cockatiel Lessons as a book for all parrot enthusiasts, especially those considering their first bird.
This book was not what I expected it was going to be at all.I am not a big non-fiction reader but have always had good luck when reading books about pets and this book was no exception. The author's story about Sugar Franklin, the little yellow cockatiel she adopts, was very well written but most importantly very readable and relatable for the reader. She could have been writing about a favorite cat or dog just as easily as a bird. Somehow I had never really thought about birds having so much personality, especially as much as this little bird had.
The reader goes through the whole journey with the author-from adoption and throughout the whole of this little bird's life. By the time the book was over, I had fallen in love with Sugar Franklin and actually cried, which is very rare for me while reading a book. I had also learned a lot more about cockatiels' then I had ever known and we did have one in our family at one point. Who knew that birds could be so sociable and personable? It was definitely an education for me!
It was a really quick read for me,and I never felt the need to put it down(as in bored) because I was totally enjoying the read. I heartily recommend this book to all people that have ever loved a pet of any kind. You won't be disappointed.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest and fair review.
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book. It's an easy read. I couldn't believe how much Sugar Franklin was like my Gracie Ann. I was entertained, I learned a lot, and I just loved it! It is not a "How to care for book", It is the story of lady and her birds; you learn a lot as you read her story. BUT reader beware the end is very very sad.
Cute story. It was a nice introduction to what life with a cockatiel as a pet might hold. I read this to my children after agreeing to a cockatiel as a new family pet. It was nice hear how someone else related to their pet bird.
If you've ever been so fortunate to have shared your life with an avian companion, you will totally relate. If you've ever had a pet, you will be drawn into the interdependence of human to animal. If you've never shared your life with any animal - you'll gain an insight into what it really means to be owned.
A very enjoyable book about a woman and a bird, or, possibly, more about the lengths two beings will take to forge the bonds of trust and understanding. A must read for any human.
