I am at a true loss for words right now. I literally just finished reading this book. And I feel like I have so much I could say, but the words not coming out. This book became an automatic 5 Star read for me when I hit 80% mark. Mini heart attack. I was screaming. I was crying. I lost it. My own mother shouted across the house, asking what the heck was wrong with her eldest, 23 year old, daughter.
If you enjoyed books like Never Tear Us Apart and Never Let You Go by Monica Murphy, Under My Skin by Laura Diamond, Love in B Minor and FEAR ME, FEAR ME NOT by Elodie Nowodazkij, then this is definitely for you. This book is heart-wrenchingly amazing. Its the kind of book that will have you up all night. I have proof, if needed. Not that I plan to show off the black circles beneath my eyes.

I didn't expect to like the book as much as I actually did and part of that came from the characters themselves. I thought Lexie was pretty closed-off from a lot of people and never hesitated to hold people at a distance for fear that they might leave her. She had a lot of trust issues because of her parents and found it hard to tell anyone including her friends anything true about her. She was a habitual liar, even acknowledging that fact, and she couldn't help but tell lies all her life because of what happened when she was younger for fear she might be judged. It was nice to see Lexie slowly open up to Dalton because he knew the truth about her. He was shy, a bit of a loner, but also didn't want to waste his life by playing things safe and never getting out to experience the world. He was passionate about music and very open to new things but also struggled to open up about himself for fear of being pitied. I like the interactions between Lexie and Dalton and thought they were relatable in some ways.

I liked the pace of the story even though the beginning was a little bit sudden in the way that I felt kind of thrown into the story. It was easy enough to get into, however, and as the book plays out, we learn about who Lexie really is, what happened to her and Dalton when they were kids that sent both their lives spiraling, as well as watch both characters grow and experience new things. The book went a lot deeper than I was expecting, even at times being heartbreaking and just plain sad. It was very touching and dealt with darker issues than I see in most YA novels and I really liked that.

Not only was this book deeper, darker, and more meaningful than I was expecting, it also talked a lot about living your life to the fullest and making every minute count. I also really liked that it was diverse in the way of both racial diversity and subject diversity. I haven't read a lot of books in the past that deal with the medical conditions that this book talks about for one of the characters and it was nice to see because it made the book stand out for me. I think this book has a lot to offer and I have to say, it makes me excited to see what Katie's next book has in store.

The reason I didn't give this book a five-star rating is because while I liked most things about this book, the romance did get a little cheesy or a tad bit dramatic for my taste. It also felt like the book ended in a tad bit of a cliffhanger even though the story was pretty much wrapped up. The climax was also a bit disappointing after everything the characters went through so I would've liked a little something extra just to bring the final punch. Overall, I was pretty impressed with this book and I think it's a promising YA debut and has me excited for more from the author.

This story follows 16 year old Lexie Stein, who has spent most of her life fabricating lies about her life to hide what has really happened. Then comes along Dalton Reyes who she last saw in a puddle of his own blood. He is the only person who knows what her life is/was actually like.

That's about all I can give without getting into spoilers. I almost put this book down a few times because of the insane amount of teenage lust/instalove. But decided to keep going. Underlying all the "omghessoooooohot" "omghesmiledatme" "omgomgomg", the story of Dalton Reyes was good. It was interesting and I was invested, not in the characters, but rather the past of the character (Dalton). I wanted to know what happened to him leading up to him meeting back up with Lexie five years later. However with that being said, I don't feel like it was the most original plot. Sub in a different problem and you'd have the same result. It was predictable. Overall, I was just really disappointed that there wasn't more substance to this story because it could have been great. I spent a majority of my time reading rolling my eyes.
This is a debut author I'm excited to read more from. Her characters are unique, yet real, and their dialogue is romantic and memorable. Kaleski writes the kind of sentences that make your heart skip a beat after you read them. I saved several quotes while reading through the pages, unable to stop until I reached the final one. In love with Dalton. Man, the opening pages. I may have to read this whole thing again.
This book was really cute. Dalton was a win for me but I think there were some things that unsettled me towards the end that I can't really speak on being that I don't suffer from what the hero suffered from, so I'm not really qualified to speak on whether that particular way the story went was a respectable outcome. But I did enjoy the fact that he was a boy of color and just existed. He wasn't "the Asian kid" like Park was in Eleanor and Park. He was Dalton Reyes. He wasn't green eyed,avoiding the green eyed Asian trope. That I really appreciated. I'd totally read another book from this author.
